A rare opportunity to own a unique piece of American history. The W.L Wellwood General Store is located in The Beautiful South Coventry CT Historic distinct. The general store was originally built in 1787 making it one of, if not the oldest General Store in America (we have not found one older). The Greek Revival Store was built in 1820 making it one of the oldest Greek Revival commercial buildings in the country. The last addition was built in 1883 as the town butcher shop and grain room. The retail side of the building was used as a General Store till 1974 at that time it was opened as an Antique Shop. The store is presently closed.

The residence (which contains the original store) is an approximately 2100 square foot 2 story Italianate. With 8 rooms that could be used as 3 bedrooms with front and rear parlors or 5 bedrooms, Living room, Country Kitchen, and Small Den. Both levels have full baths with the second story bath restored with original 1909 fixtures.
The General store is over 3000 square feet of useable space with approximately 1500 square feet of basement. Most original details remain including many of the 1830 shelves.

The building is zoned mixed use residence / retail. Zoning has also approved a food service license. Located on Main St. (CT route 31) the daily traffic count is around 12,000. The area is mixed retail and Victorian homes with over 100 buildings being on the national register. Walking distance to Patriots Park on Lake Wangumbaug ,Millbrook Park and walkway, church, restaurants, stores, next door the library. Great place to live and work.
